Planning a games room
Start with the cue zone
A player needs a cue's length behind the cue ball on every side of the table. The shaded zone on the plan is the playing area plus your cue length all round. Keep chairs, stands and furniture out of it. If the room is short on one side, a 52in or 48in cue by the table covers the shots near that wall. The room size calculator checks every table size at once.
Walls: racks, scoreboards and art
Wall items don't get in the way of a shot, so they can go anywhere. A cue rack works best near where you stand to choose a cue, and a scoreboard where both players can see it from the table. Leave the wall behind a door clear.
Light over the table
A table light hangs centred over the playing area, about 80–90cm above the cloth, so it lights the whole bed without glare. It is a ceiling fitting: have an electrician put it in.
Look after the cloth
A brush and a cover keep dust off the cloth between games, and a towel keeps the cue clean. Check that the cover fits your table size and the balls fit your pockets: snooker balls are smaller than pool balls.
