The rules of thumb

Cue length by height

Your heightCue length
Under 4'7" (140 cm)48 inches (junior cue)
4'7" to 5'1" (140 to 154 cm)52 inches
5'1" to 5'5" (155 to 164 cm)55 to 56 inches
5'5" to 6'0" (165 to 183 cm)57 inches (standard)
6'0" to 6'4" (184 to 193 cm)58 inches
Over 6'4" (193 cm)59 to 60 inches

A quick check: stand the cue upright next to you. A snooker cue that reaches roughly to your shoulder or chin is in the right range. Arm length and stance matter too, so if you are between sizes, choose the longer cue; a mini-butt extension covers the rest.

Weight

Most snooker players use 17 to 18.5oz. Start at 17.5 to 18oz; go heavier (18.5 to 19oz) if you are tall or like a smooth, weighty stroke, and lighter (15 to 16oz) for juniors. See 17oz vs 18oz vs 19oz explained.

Joint

A 3/4 jointed cue fits a standard 3/4 case and takes a mini-butt extension, which makes it the practical choice if you carry your cue. A one-piece cue has nothing to come loose and suits a cue that stays in one place. More in 3/4-jointed vs one-piece.

Questions people ask

What length snooker cue do I need?

Most adults between about 5'5" and 6'0" (165 to 183 cm) suit the standard 57 inch cue. Taller players often prefer 58 inches or a short extension, and players under about 5'5" are usually more comfortable with 55 to 56 inches.

What weight snooker cue should a beginner buy?

17.5 to 18oz. It is heavy enough to stay steady through the stroke and light enough to control. Very tall or strong players sometimes prefer 18.5 to 19oz; juniors are better on 15 to 16oz.

What tip size is best for snooker?

9.5 to 10mm for beginners, because a slightly larger tip is more forgiving. Many experienced players go down to 9 to 9.5mm for sighting and control. UK 8-ball pool uses 8 to 9mm; US pool uses about 13mm.

Should I buy a one-piece or a 3/4 jointed cue?

A 3/4 jointed cue if you carry it to a club: it fits a standard case and takes a mini-butt extension. A one-piece cue if it lives at home or at the club; some players like the uninterrupted feel.
